Changes to ORBA


50 - 08/03/2019 -- The following changes were made:

  • Chapter 1: Did some light editing on the Features page to make things a bit more clear.

49 - 06/25/2019 -- The following changes were made:

  • Chapter 4: Made movement into the Aggression Zone a free move, and provided other rules about this movement as well.

48 - 02/16/2019 -- The following changes were made:

  • The Gear Option has been made the default rules, and War Forms have been made optional. Changes have been made wherever needed to reflect this.
  • Chapter 2: Techs shouldn't need specific gear to work.
  • Chapter 2: Added a new step 10 to replace the removal of the War Forms section. "Step 10: Starting Equipment".
  • Chapter 2: Added a note that Features and Status Effect effects stack.
  • Chapter 2: "Weapons and Armor" section removed, a different one added to Chapter 3 as part of the Gear Option becoming the new default.
  • Chapter 3: Removed the "New Equipment" section as it's now redundant.
  • Chapter 3: As said earlier, a new version of the "Weapons and Armor" section from Chapter 2 was added.
  • Chapter 3: New rules regarding enchanted gear added for games using the Status Effect rules.
  • Chapter 4: Made it so Tech combos are a little harder. Difficulty on the second Tech upped by +1.
  • Chapter 4: Clarified how FP can be lost in a Tech combo.

47 - 02/16/2019 -- The following changes were made:

  • Chapter 4: Removed any FP gain or loss in Status Effects other than +1 or -1.

46 - 02/12/2019 -- The following changes were made:

  • Game content converted to HTML for the new website.

  • Chapter 4: Renamed the section "Move" to "Change Zone". Altered the text to reflect a change in focus rather than movement.

  • Chapter 4: Changed the penalty for a second ranged attack from -3 to -5.
  • Chapter 4: Added rules to "Using Techs" that take into account the Status Effect option.
  • Chapter 4: Renamed the section, "Animals Companions and NPC Followers" in Battle" to "Pets and Followers in Battle".
  • Chapter 4: Changed the location of the "Battle Arena" and "Pets and Followers in Battle" sections.
  • Chapter 4: Made it possible to move from any zone to any zone.
  • Chapter 4: Lowered the amount of Focus that could be recovered in a turn.

45 - 01/30/2019 -- The following changes were made:

  • The Terms of Use were updated. Just a few minor clarifications.

44 - 12/19/2018 -- The following changes were made:

  • Chapter 2: Added the option to make up Techs as the player goes along.
  • Chapter 3: Very light editing.

  • Chapter 2: Added the note about what different tiers can represent.

  • Chapter 4: Reviving an ally needs a roll of at least 5 rather than 4.

  • Chapter 1: Said you'll need a 12 sided-die if using the Gear Option.
  • Chapter 4: Fixed an omission in the default attack rules.
  • Chapter 4: Changed the attack rules under the Gear Option to use a d12.

  • Chapter 4: Added Attack rank to Base Attack, modified Gear Option attack rules to reflect this.

  • Chapter 2: Clarified Feature rules.
  • Chapter 2: Changed the name "Peace Abilities" to "Core Abilities".
  • Chapter 2: Made Features able to have constant effects.
  • Chapter 2: Added the note that GMs need to decide how broad Features are.
  • Chapter 2: Added the Gear Option as an alternative to War Forms, along with rules for enchanted gear.

36 - 07/08/2018 -- The following changes were made:

  • Chapter 2: Peace Abilities have been made very specific. Now it's not possible for Strength to refer to either muscle or something like telekinesis.
  • Chapter 2: Resolve and its use have been further clarified.
  • Chapter 2: The War Ability "Attack" has been clarified.
  • Chapter 2: A section has been added for animal companions and NPC followers.
  • Chapter 4: Animal companions and NPC followers can now participate in battle.
  • Chapter 4: Made each Tech able to be attempted twice per battle.

35 - 07/05/2018 -- The following changes were made:

  • Chapter 2: Made the example skills more broad.

  • Chapter 2: Changed "Pure Race" to "Single Race".

    28 - 05/13/2018 -- The following changes were made:

    • Chapter 4: Light editing.

    27 - 05/11/2018 -- The following changes were made:

    • Chapter 2: Light editing.
    • Chapter 2: Made it so Features cannot affect Focus.
    • Chapter 3: Fixed an error in the Trial difficulty table.
    • Chapter 4: Named the zones on the Battle Arena, also did some light editing.

    26 - 05/03/2018 -- The following changes were made:

    • Chapter 2: Edited Infirmity Rules. Added the line "IAs are not given to specific..."
    • Chapter 4: Under "Battle Initiative" replaced "Wits" with "Battlemind". Also revised the text in parenthesis in the same line.
    • Chapter 4: Added labels to the Battle Arena image.
    • Hero Sheet: Added a place to record Infirmity Adjustments.

    25 - 04/28/2018 -- The following changes were made:

    • Chapter 1: Removed much of the text.

    24 - 08/18/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • Fixed a number of spelling errors that my spellchecker didn't see for some reason.

    23 - 08/12/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • Did some editing in the PDF, and altered the formatting a bit. Improved the overall appearance and readability.
    • Separated the hero sheet back into its own PDF, as it used to be.

    22 - 08/10/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • Entirely converted rules to PDF format.
    • Chapter 1: Editing.
    • Chapter 2: Editing.
    • Chapter 2: Clarified a number of Feature rules.
    • Chapter 2: Features can now affect Focus loss or regeneration, just not War Abilities or Techs.
    • Chapter 2: Added that each Feature can have only one effect.
    • Chapter 2: Changed how Feature balance should be sought; instead of having the same sum of Positive and Negative degrees in a single character, just make sure every player has the same amount of degrees of each type.

    21 - 08/06/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • Chapter 2: Clarified the definition of Agility.
    • Chapter 2: Changed Coordination to Dexterity.
    • Chapter 2: Added a note in Step Five about what to do when Peace Abilities need to get more specific in how they're used.
    • Chapter 2: Added Features as Step Ten, and added talk of them to Step Two.
    • Updated the hero sheet to reflect these changes.

    20 - 07/28/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • Chapter 2: Did some editing.
    • Chapter 2: Added rules for races.
    • Chapter 2: Added that race and homeland may add to the list of free Skills possessed by a hero.
    • Chapter 2: Made a note in Skills about how free Skills should be written down only if the player has intent to grow them.
    • Chapter 2: Added that PAs, IAs, and RAs all stack.
    • Chapter 2: Added some text to reflect that classes in ORBA are about roleplaying rather than rules.
    • Updated the hero sheet for races.

    19 - 07/05/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • Chapter 2: Gave players 4 points to distribute in Peace abilities at Devotion 1, instead of 2.
    • Chapter 2: Put a +2 limit on Peace Abilities at Devotion 1.
    • Chapter 2: Changed Wits to Battlemind. Altered the description a bit.
    • Chapter 2: Changed Willpower to Resolve.
    • Chapter 2: Added Agility as a new Peace ability. Noted in the description how Agility and Speed are different.
    • Chapter 2: Altered Coordination, removing its measure of clumsiness. Added that it measures the hero's ability to work with their hands.
    • Chapter 2: Noted that Mind also measures the ability to react quickly outside of battle.
    • Chapter 3: Edited the "Chapters And Hero Advancement" section a bit.
    • Chapter 3: Heavily edited the "The End" section.
    • Updated the hero sheet.

    18 - 06/30/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • Did a lot of editing in every chapter.
    • In chapter 2, cleared up some errata. The Proficiency Adjustments section. It was still talking about Rank Dice there.
    • Removed the creating NPCs section from chapter 2. Didn't seem needed.
    • In chapter 3, revised Events so that Plot Forks and Trials are just a kind of Event. Also added two new forms of Events: Dialogues and Happenings.
    • In chapter 3, revised how Skills work. Made it so that the bonus they provide depends on a roll.
    • In chapter 3, fixed an issue in the "The End" section that didn't say what the Forms should be reset to.
    • In chapter 3, tweaked the sandbox rules a bit. No goal equals no Devotion increase.
    • In chapter 4, removed the "Number of Combatants" section. Seemed unneeded.
    • In chapter 4, revised the "Starting Placement" rules. Placement is now more free, and rules were added for how to handle surprise.
    • In chapter 4, made it so enemies can revive KO'd allies and recover Focus.
    • In chapter 4, added a clarification about only two Techs being allowed in a combo.
    • In chapter 4, revised the "Defeated Heroes" rules to make it so enemies are also considered KO'd by defeat, but heroes can immediately kill them.
    • Added "Chapters Completed" to the hero sheet.
    • Added "Total" fill-ins for Rank + PA stuff on the hero sheet.

    17 - 06/28/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • Chapters 2 and 3 were modified anywhere necessary to make it clear that Focus is restored after a battle's end. The rules were contradictory on that point.

    16 - 06/21/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • Changed Attack Form "Endurance" to "Fortitude".

    15 - 05/18/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • Added optional rules to Chapter 3 for sandbox games.

    14 - 05/02/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • In general, ORBA has been streamlined and expanded.
    • Only d6 dice are used now.
    • No Luck and Rank die anymore.
    • Peace Abilities have been added.
    • Battle Abilities can now have the grade of "S".
    • The way Skills work has been changed.
    • Total revision of all the rules for Trials.
    • Added rules for Unskilled Trials.
    • Revised the advancement rules for all the new stuff.
    • Made it take 10 chapters instead of 5 for a PA.
    • Added the battle option of delaying turn.
    • Confrontations no longer take place over three phases.
    • To further decrease dice rolling, Base Defense has been added.
    • Tech use has been altered to fit new confrontation rules.
    • Tech Combo rules have been added.
    • Successful Tech use has been made a little more likely.
    • Made it possible to run from battles.
    • Updated the Hero Sheet to reflect all these changes.
    • Added a section in Chapter 2 for creating NPCs.
    • Spontaneous Trials are now permitted to potentially affect the adventure.
    • Edited Chapters 1-4 a bit.

    13 - 04/27/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • Added links to the Hero sheet to chapter 2.
    • Updated chapter 1's section, "What Makes ORBA Special?"

    12 - 04/26/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • Updated the definition of Devotion in chapter 2 to include faith.
    • Changed "Power" Adjustment to "Proficiency" Adjustment, throughout all pages.
    • Changed "Resourceful" attack form to "Resourcefulness" in chapter 2.
    • Added a PDF hero sheet.
    • Some light editing in chapter 3.

    11 - 04/24/2017 -- The following changes were made:

    • Some edits to chapter 2.

    10 - 04/12/2013 -- The following changes were made:

    • Some edits to chapter 1.
    • Removed "The Scripted Main Plot" section from chapter 3.
    • All "Spontaneous" sections removed from chapter 3.
    • Some small edits to better reflect no longer having the removed sections. Changes made only in chapter 3.

    9 - 03/13/2013 -- The following changes were made:

    • Lots of additions and modifications to chapters 2, 3 and 4!
    • Added expanded Ability rules, with five Forms of Attack and Defense.
    • Added a new section to chapter 3, "An Optional Trial Idea: Stages".
    • Reduced the number Chapters required for a +1 PA to 5. (Was at 10.)
    • Increased the maximum positive PA to +7, reduced the maximum negative PA to -2.
    • Added a rule that states IAs and negative PAs stack together.
    • Removed the "Italics" section from chapter 3.
    • Removed the Trial difficulty chart from chapter 3 and replaced it with a section called "A Tool for Designing Trials".
    • Added terms "Luck Die" and "Rank Die".
    • Added term "Rank Bonus".
    • Arena zones are now called "focus zones".
    • The center zone is now called the "aggression zone".
    • Added terms "attack roll" and "defense roll".
    • Added term "aggression modifier".
    • Changed Tech ranks to Tech levels.

    8 - 02/26/2013 -- The following changes were made:

    • Across all chapters "FP" is now simply referred to as "Focus". (Affects chapters 2-4.)
    • Across all chapters "ATT" and "DEF" are now simply referred to as "Attack" and "Defense". (Affects chapters 2-4.)
    • All Focus lost during a Trial is restored at the end of the Trial.
    • Modified "Spontaneous Battles" in chapter 3.
    • Added "The Scripted Main Plot" to chapter 3.
